Surrounded by the Cicolano mountains, at the foot of the Duchessa Mountains (Nature Reserve), lies the medieval village of Corvaro.
A village that has preserved its harmony and imaginative medieval character, jealously guarded by the castle and the imposing circular tower that still stand today as if they were still defending the village.
About 2 km from the village is the Franciscan village of S. Francesco Vecchio, with a church built around 1255. Built within the village, but much more recent, is the church of S. Francesco Nuovo.
In the immediate vicinity of Corvaro, on the slopes of Mount Frontino, we find the beautiful medieval village of S. Stefano, where we can admire the church of the same name, which contains beautiful frescoes from the 1300s.
The upper Salto valley, called Cicolano, derives its name from the equicoli who once inhabited it.
It includes the municipalities of Borgorose, Petrella Salto, Pescorocchiano, and Fiamignano.
On a hill between the village of Borgorose and its hamlet of Corvaro, there is a burial mound known as “il Montariolo,” which is very important for Proto-Lazian archaeology and, in particular, for the study of the Equicoli people. Although now completely excavated, the Corvaro burial mound has yielded much evidence of the customs and rituals of the Equicoli and has raised many questions about them.
The MAC – Cicolano Archaeological Museum in Corvaro di Borgorose preserves numerous archaeological finds that testify to the presence in the Salto or Cicolano valley of the Equicoli people, the descendants of the ancient Equi people confined to the mountains of this inaccessible territory. The exhibition route winds through 10 rooms on two floors of the new museum, which boasts a completely renovated infrastructure recovered from a disused school complex.
