Along the E1 to discover the archaeological sites of the land of the Equi

The path in this stretch creeps into the Duchess Mountains Nature Reserve. Between nature and history, the itinerary takes us to retrace the steps of some European travelers of the 1800s, like Sir Edward Dodwell, to whom the archaeological site above Alzano di Pescorocchiano owe sits name, in fact it is known as Grotta del Cavaliere, it was during the surveys of this site that Dodwell struck by sunstroke found death after a few days.
The route allows you to visit characteristic villages such as the beautiful medieval village of Castelmenardo and from there, through the gorges of the Apa Torrent (tributary of the Salto River) and the enchanting geological of the Fosse Larghe (small waterfalls on the aforementioned T. Apa), Santo Stefano , the village of the mills, with the mole Martorelli, the highest, located just below the exit of the Roman tunnel, which allowed the waters of the Apa Torrent of the overlying Malito Valley to supply the mills (about 12) places in Valle del Monte Frontino.

The stage in crumbs

From Pescorocchiano, passing west of the rocky ridge on which the oldest part of the town is located, descend towards the “Canale” locality and from there pass the bridge over the Salto river to Poggio San Giovanni and from there to Sant’Elpidio. From here “Castagneta” follows the European path E1, which definitely points to the “Grotta del Cavaliere”, an important Italico-Roman archaeological site.

The stage crosses the villages of Sant’Elpidio, Colle Maggiore, Castel Menardo and Santo Stefano to reach the fifteenth century part of the village of Corvaro near Fonte Vecchia.
