82 km! That’s the distance from Accumoli to L’Aquila, covering the last six stages of the fourth week.
The route will skirt the highest mountains in the entire Apennines, penetrating deeper and deeper into the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
After the first stage, the 20th, which connects Accumoli to Amatrice, we will cross the Tronto River Valley and the SS4 Salaria. This corner of land is the border between three regions (Lazio, Marche, and Umbria) and the boundary between two beloved National Parks, one historic, mentioned above, and one much younger: the Monti Sibillini National Park.
We are therefore in one of the most natural and environmentally valuable areas of the Apennines, where nature protection is almost seamless!
After Amatrice, the road climbs gently towards the basin where Lake Campotosto, a large and panoramic dam lake, is located. From here, the view rests on the nearby steep slopes that end at the peaks of the Monti della Laga chain and extends to the more distant profiles of the 2700, 2800, and 2900 m peaks of the Gran Sasso massif and its western chain.
Stages 23 and 24 will allow us to enjoy the highest mountain environments, with a night at the Fioretti Refuge, located in the upper part of Val Chiarino.
The descent, once we reach Passo del Belvedere, towards San Pietro della Jenca offers a privileged view of the L’Aquila basin.
