Canterano stands on a rocky spur of the Ruffi mountains, known to locals as Morritana.
The village has ancient origins, as evidenced by archaeological finds and polygonal walls.
Long under the rule of the Abbey of Subiaco, it became a free commune when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
