The application submitted by Italy together with Greece and Austria has been approved. “This is the tenth recognition for our country on this list,” emphasizes the curator of the dossier.
ROME – Transhumance is now a UNESCO cultural heritage, albeit intangible. The traditional practice of seasonal migration of livestock has been unanimously inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. As of today, Italy also holds the record for inscriptions in the rural and agri-food sector, surpassing Turkey and Belgium. From Trentino to Amatrice, from Irpinia to Puglia, these are the symbolic places.
Satisfaction was expressed by the Ministers of Agricultural Policies, Teresa Bellanova, and the Environment, Sergio Costa, for the favorable opinion expressed by the 24 countries during the Intergovernmental Committee meeting in Bogota, Colombia. The recognition covers the whole of Italy, from the Alps to the Tavoliere: the emblematic communities indicated in the dossier as symbolic places of transhumance are diverse, including the municipalities of Amatrice (Rieti), from which the application was submitted immediately after the devastating earthquake, Frosolone (Isernia), Pescocostanzo and Anversa degli Abruzzi in the province of L’Aquila, Lacedonia in Alta Irpinia in Campania, San Marco in Lamis and Volturara Appula (the town of Prime Minister Conte) in the province of Foggia, together with areas of Lombardy, Val Senales in Trentino Alto-Adige, and Basilicata.
