Lake Salto is the largest artificial reservoir in Lazio, created by damming the river of the same name in 1940. At 90 metres, the Salto dam was the highest in Italy at the time. Its waters are shared with those of the nearby Lake Turano, also artificial, via a canal dug for about 9 kilometres under Mount Navegna.
The two artificial reservoirs feed the Cotilia hydroelectric power station, built in 1942 to serve the steelworks in Terni. The ancient fortified village of Antuni stands spectacularly in the centre of Lake Turano. Lake Salto, on the other hand, is characterised by deep fjords that wind their way between steep, wooded banks. Fascinating to explore by canoe and kayak, these lakes are also a destination for lovers of sport fishing and birdwatching.
